Commander's Comments - December 2022

This year's Veterans Day Program, emceed for the eight year by Cap Wallington, was quite impressive. Our speaker, James Allen Taylor, Major, U.S. Army (Retired), gave a talk, at times most emotional, on his experience in 1967/1968 Vietnam, which earned him the Congressional Medal of Honor. What a dedicated and humble hero! And as always, we were entertained by singers, Donna Mattson, Barbra “Babs” Conner, and Terry Allwein. The Program was followed by a Tri Tip Lunch by John Abas, and Babs’ Karaoke in the Bunker.

We will have a General Meeting at 5:00 PM, Tuesday 6 December, in the Remembrance Room.

On Wednesday, 7 December, we will have a Program remembering the infamous Pearl Harbor Attack, 7 December 1941, at which we will honor our WWII Veterans, with patriotic WWII music by Barbra Conner and Jamie Hogan. This will take place in our Dining Hall at 11:00 AM, followed by a $10 Roasted Pork Lunch by John Abas. For Lunch reservations, please call our Post and leave a message at: (530) 575-7002.

As in our November Newsletter, we will support DAR’s “Wreaths Across America,” at 12:00 noon on Saturday, 17 December, at St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Grass Valley.

Also, as per the Flyer in our November Newsletter, we will host a $15 Country Christmas Party Dance, at 6:00 PM on Saturday, 17 December, in the Vets Hall Auditorium. Performing will once again be “Robby James And The Streets Of Bakersfield.” Food will be available for purchase from Taco Felix. And our Post will provide a no-host bar. A Great country band you will not want to miss.

The following day, Sunday, 18 December, from 12:00 noon to 4:00 PM, Babs will host a Karaoke Christmas Party in the “Bunker.”

A lot going on! Come on out and have fun.

All for now… Claude

Commander's Comments - November 2022

Our 8 October “Sock Hop” was well attended by Girl Scouts, parents and others, who learned some new dance steps from Jamie Hogan and Barbra “Babs” Conner. Everyone enjoyed delicious food, at no cost, from Caesar’s Truck, provided by our Post. Our Auxiliary provided various types of ice cream and toppings, as much as you wanted. Mike and Jean Hauser set up photo booths with holes to place your face next to a friend, for a funny picture. John Madeiros and Linda Robertson served drinks at our bar. Thanks to Babs and Jamie, our next Dance will be Saturday, 22 October, 6:00 - 10:00 PM, $12 at the door. We’ll have a bar, but no food. So, you can put on your Halloween costume for a really fun time.

The League Bowlers are back on Wednesday and Thursdays nights. The lanes and other hardwood have been resurfaced.

And thanks to the technical work done by Laurie Stanton, with the help of Dave Craigen, the score machines have been computerized to display the scores on televisions above. And many other improvements have been made, including clearing out, cleaning up, and installing bluetooth music.

There will not be a November First Tuesday Dinner or General Meeting.

Veterans Day, 11 November, will begin with our Program in the Grass Valley Veterans Hall Auditorium at 10:00 AM. You will want to hear our Keynote Speaker, Vietnam Medal Of Honor recipient, James A. Taylor, Major, U.S. Army (Retired). Emcee, Cap Wallington, has planned a most appropriate and entertaining Program. The Program will be followed at 11:00 AM by a delicious Tri Tip Lunch, potato salad, beans and dessert, prepared by John Abas, and served in the downstairs Dining Room, for only $10. Then at 11:30 AM, Babs will host Karaoke in the “Bunker” bar.

Veterans Day will also feature WWII vintage C-47 airplane rides. U.S. Air Force veteran, pilot, Juan Brown, and Mike Hauser have set up $200, 45 minute rides on 11 and 12 November, out of Nevada County Airport.

Commander's Comments - October 2022

We hosted a most moving 9/11 Ceremony to open the Roamin Angels Car Show, at the Nevada County Fairgrounds the morning of 10 September. Our Honor Guard raised and lowered the Flag, while Linda Tozzi sang our National Anthem. Your Commander talked about the multiple terrorist attacks on 11 September 2001, and honored the eleven military service members we lost while exiting Afghanistan on 26 August 2021. The Honor Guard fired three volleys, followed by Taps. And Linda Tozzi’s beautiful voice was again heard singing “God Bless The USA,” bringing tears to many assembled.

At around 11:30 Saturday, 10 September, our Honor Guard followed Nevada City Elks members, remembering and honoring U.S. Navy Veteran, Mike Sullivan, who recently passed due to cancer. After a brief American Legion Ceremony, your Commander presented his Flag to his widow, American Legion Auxiliary Unit 130 Past President, Debbie Sullivan.

At 11:00 Sunday morning 11 September, we held a well attended ceremony in front of the Grass Valley Veterans Memorial Hall. Boy Scout Troop 24 raised and lowered the Flag, as Donna Mattson sang our National Anthem. After some brief remarks from your Commander, Keynote Speaker, County Supervisor and Army Veteran, Dan Miller, walked us through what happened on 11 September 2001, honoring all those dedicated first responders who gave their all that day. Dan also honored four Boy Scouts who recently rescued fellow boy scouts when a large kayak overturned during a river run. We then honored the 13 military service members killed by a suicide bomber during our hasty withdrawal from Afghanistan, 26 August 2021. Hospice of the Foothills rang a bell with the reading of each name. Our Honor Guard shot three volleys and played Taps, followed by Barbra Conner and Jamie Hogan singing “God Bless The USA.” Donuts and coffee were served just inside the foyer thanks to our Auxiliary ladies. And the Bunker Bar was open afterwards for free bloody marys, thanks to Linda Robertson and John Madeiros.

And Barbra “Babs” Conner is back with Jamie Hogan for this coming 4th Saturday Dance, on 24 September, at 6:00 to 10:00 PM in the Grass Valley Veterans Hall Auditorium. Just $12 at the door for a really fun time, with drinks available at our portable bar, and great Mexican food available from Felix. We will be remembering dancer, Donnie Foley, recently lost in a motorcycle accident. So, come on out for some great singing and dancing.

Our most active County Veteran Service Officer, David West, is hosting a VSO Convention in the Grass Valley Veterans Hall, 17 - 20 October.

Veterans Day is 11 November, and we will start our Program in the Auditorium at 10:00 AM. Our Color Guard will open by Parading the Colors. Then Donna Mattson will sing our National Anthem. Emcee Cap Wallington’s Keynote Speaker will be Vietnam Veteran Medal of Honor recipient, James A. Taylor, Major, U.S. Army (Retired). And there will be singing by “Sisters In Song” and Barbra Conner and Terry Allwain. The program will end at 11:00 with our Honor Guard firing three gun volleys followed by Taps. After the Program, come on down to the Dining Hall, where Chef Brian

If you did not come out for our August Dinner, you missed a most delicious BBQ of Ribs and Chicken, prepared by our new Chef, Brian Bliss. On top of that, we were entertained by Barbra “Babs” Conner and Jamie Hogan of “Sierra Beautes.” Their beautiful, harmonic voices sang throughout dinner, with songs we all love. It was a very special night. We also presented our dedicated, long time Chef, John Abas, with an American Legion Certificate of Appreciation. Thank you once again, John, for your years of service to our Post.

With the 1st Tuesday of September happening to fall the day after Labor Day, we’re going to pass on a September Dinner. We will meet upstairs in the Remembrance Room at 5:00 PM on Tuesday, 6 September, for our General Meeting.

A couple days following our 3 May Dinner, unfortunately a lot of people came down with stomach sickness. According to a nurse who was among the sick, she was convinced that norovirus was the cause. We had the kitchen totally sanitized, and also received a most thorough County Health Inspection… so sorry. With Memorial Day and July 4th falling so close to the first Tuesdays of those months, we’re shooting for Tuesday, 2 August, for our next Dinner. We will have our General Meeting at 5:00 PM, on Tuesday, 7 June, in the Remembrance Room. Have a most fun night for only $12 at the door, with our portable bar for your favorite drinks. Closely following our huge Armed Forces Day Event in Downtown Grass Valley, Saturday, 21 May, will be our Memorial Day Program in the Grass Valley Veterans Hall. The Program will run about an hour, starting at 11:00 AM. Our Program will honor those who gave their all, with our most talented singers, Donna Mattson, Barbra Conner, Terry Alwain, and Judy Gurley performing most appropriate patriotic songs. Veteran and Veteran support organizations will participate in a Wreath Ceremony and you will hear interesting moments from two veterans, SR-71 Blackbird pilot, Dan House, Lieutenant Colonel, U.S. Air Force (Retired), and A-4F Skyhawk pilot, Greg Marshall, Commander, U.S. Navy (Retired). The Bridge on highway 49, over the South Fork of the Yuba River, was dedicated to Vietnam Veterans on 29 March, due to the efforts of our local chapter of Vietnam Veterans of America, and Keith Grueneberg. California Assemblywoman Megan Dahle was instrumental in getting the Bridge recognition done, and she was there at the dedication. Vietnam Veterans Day is not that well known, but was first declared by the U.S. Senate on 28 March 2011. It was changed to the 29th the next year by President Obama. However, Chef John Abas will be preparing a delicious Mexican dinner, on Tuesday, “Tres de Mayo,” 3 May, at 6:00 PM, following our 5:00 PM General Meeting upstairs. The Dinner will be two tacos, rice, beans and desert, for only $12, with the option to add another taco or two for $2 each. So, don’t hesitate… call in your reservation!

We will be serving lunch to all active duty present, provided by both our Post and the Elks, at the Grass Valley Elks Club. This is the largest Armed Forces Day Event in my memory, thanks to the extraordinary efforts of our Adjutant, Mike Hauser, in conjunction with the Chamber of Commerce, Downtown Association, and Nevada County..

Also, Memorial Day is soon here… Monday, 30 May. We will be hosting a ceremony in the Grass Valley Veterans Hall Auditorium, at 11:00 AM. In honor of our fallen Veterans, there will be a Wreath Ceremony involving various local Veteran and Veteran support organizations. Appropriate music will be provided by Donna Mattson, Barbra Conner, and Judy Gurley. We will also hear from two Vietnam Veterans, SR-71 Blackbird pilot, Dan House, Lieutenant Colonel, U.S. Air Force (Retired), and A-7 pilot, Greg Marshall, Commander, U.S. Navy (Retired), telling their most interesting experiences.

And don’t forget that the weekend just before Memorial Day, Friday and Saturday, 27, 28 May, will feature our Auxiliary’s Poppy Program. If available to help at the various sites around the area, please call Janet Hessel to sign up for a location at: (530) 277-2988. A lot going on, so come on out and enjoy!

After being shut-down for nearly two years, we opened up and rented our bowling alley to a private party on Friday, 3 December. People attending had a great time, playing Christmas music in both the bowling alley and bar. Thanks to Tim Sheridan for helping out. So spread the news that our Bowling Alley and Bar are available for rental to private parties. Any members available to bartend at our events, please contact either our Bar Manager, John Madeiros, or myself.

Our Pearl Harbor Attack 80th Anniversary Program, on 7 December, was so well done, documenting and honoring those who gave their all that day. Donna Mattson, Barbra Conner and Jamie Hogan sounded so good, singing patriotic songs. WWII veteran, Stan Zapka, captured and kept audience attention throughout his 24 minute talk. Our WWII veteran, Willy Mills, was present and honored. And afterward, John Abas exceeded expectations with a delicious dinner with turkey and all the trimmings, while the "Sierra Beauts" entertained, beautifully performing a set of Christmas music.

We hosted Beale Air Force Base families on Friday, 17 December, providing heavy horderves, prepared by John Abas. Thanks to all who helped and participated, especially our Adjutant, Mike Hauser, who organized and coordinated the event, as he always does.

And on Saturday, 11 December, thanks to Pete Vasilokas, we had over ninety people in the upstairs auditorium dancing to Robby James and the Streets of Bakersfield. The floor was so covered by tables, making the dance floor smaller, so people were dancing in the foyer. John Madeiros bartended to the large crowd, selling out of several beverages. Donna Mattson sold tickets at the door. And Felix Taco Truck sold out his prepared Mexican plates.

Our next dance will take place on Saturday, 22 January, also in the upstairs auditorium, when Barbra Conner and Jamie Hogan,"Sierra Beauts," will professionally perform, as they did at our 7 December Pearl Harbor Program, providing a wide variety of dance music, and mixing it up with some karaoke. You will not want to miss this event!

As the first Tuesday in January falls so close to the New Years, we will delay our next First Tuesday General Meeting and Monthly Dinner until 1 February.

Our successful events at the end of 2021 totally pave the path to a most successful 2022. So, stay tuned and come on out!

All for now…
